The Guide to ASOT 800 Utrecht – The Manual

In the words of Andy Williams, it’s the most wonderful time of the year. Nope, we’re not talking about Christmas. It’s even better. It’s A State Of Trance!

Whether you are gearing up for your very first ASOT experience or attend the event every year, we’ve got some advice that will help you make the most of it. Read it all in The Guide to ASOT 800 Utrecht – The Manual…

How To Get There
Here we go! You’ve been waiting for ages, purchased your precious ticket right away and booked your flights and hotel months ago. Now, you find yourself  in front of the massive Jaarbeurs building. It may ‘just’ be a huge warehouse set up with the best acoustic and lights equipment, but its immense size could be dazzling even for the most dedicated of fans.

Depending on your ticket, you will have to reach one of the entrances. Since there are a multitude of signs pointing you in the right direction, this shouldn’t be much of a problem. At the entrance, you will receive a map of the floor, along with some other useful information. This makes it a lot easier to figure out where each of the four stages can be found and how to get there. Keep the map with you at all times; it’s going to come in handy.

How To Pay For Stuff
Remember the last time you visited ASOT? Can you recall the struggle that came with having to exchange your money for tokens in order to buy food and drinks? Not anymore! This year, there’s the cashless payment card.

Cashless means you only need one personal cashless payment card to make a purchase at every bar and food stand at A State Of Trance. You can upgrade your card with credits. You can buy these credits online in advance to avoid the hassle, or later at the event. You won’t have pockets full of coins and, more importantly, no more coins left over. For only 1 credit of  €2,86, you can apply for a refund after the festival. Just make sure to register your personal cashless payment card.

Want to avoid waiting in long queues and go party straight away? Here’s how to get your personal cashless payment card:
Step 1 – Head over to
Step 2 – Select your preferred language in the right top corner, just below “FAQ”. You can choose either Dutch (standard) or English.
Step 3 – Follow the instructions on the website. If you live in the Netherlands, you will receive the cashless card at your specified address, two to three days before the event. If you live abroad, you can pick up your cashless card at the cashless service desks upon showing your ticket and ID.

If you can’t or don’t want to order your cashless payment card online, you can get yours at the cashless service desks at the Jaarbeurs before or during the event.

NOTE: When you verify your account, it’s important to open your verification e-mail on the same device (pc, smartphone, tablet) you’ve used during your registration.
NOTE 2: For more information about how all of this works, please visit this page.

What To Bring
Ah, the ASOT starter kit. Here what you need to bring:

  • ID;
  • Your cashless payment card (and either a credit card of some cash to charge your card if you haven’t done so online);
  • Ear plugs (You are going to need this and here’s why);
  • Your mobile phone;
  • Excitement beyond measure.

You can always choose to leave the majority of your personal belongings in your locker.

What NOT To Bring
We know you’re here for the music and to have a great time with your friends, but we still have to point out the obvious. DO NOT bring any alcoholic drinks, drugs or weapons of any kind. Needless to say, you won’t be allowed to join the party/enter the venue if you do.

The Main Focus
Our guess is that you’ve already seen the timetable, but it won’t hurt to show you again. Can you believe you have nine hours of Trance music ahead? Let’s take a closer look:

You are spoiled for choice, so check the timetable carefully beforehand to plan everything accordingly. Also, you might want to walk to the area in question at least 30 minutes before your favorite DJ starts. Otherwise, the area may be too full already. Those who are in possession of a VIP ticket will, of course, always be allowed access to the main stage.

How To Keep Track Of Your Friends
The location is huge. You and your friends could choose to attend different acts at different times, which is why we suggest that you inform your fellow trancers about your plans and whereabouts. Also you may want to meet up with them at a certain time and place every now and then. This way, you’ll avoid losing contact with your friends if anything happens (loss of mobile phone, dead battery, etc.).

The Stalls And Stands
Besides the stages, there are countless stalls, stands and other utilities and necessities that you might want to make use of throughout the night. Here’s an overview.

Food/Drink Stalls
If you are craving for a sandwich or ice cream or just want something to drink, the food area offers a wide variety of tasty snacks. Again, make sure you go before or after the set you planned to attend. And don’t worry too much about the queue. Despite the amount of people waiting in line, the service is quick and flows nicely.

First Aid
Another important issue. What if you feel sick? Whether it’s an annoying flu or something else that tries to ruin the magic of the night, don’t panic. There is a big first aid point at the venue, where super kind and professional doctors are there to help you. Just bring your ID, tell them what’s wrong and inform them about any allergies or intolerance you might have. They will help you out and make sure you’re ready to hit the dance floor again in no time.

Although you won’t be spending a lot of time in the toilets (we hope :)), it could be wise to check where the nearest toilet is and go there before you get to the stage where your favorite artist is set to play. This way, you don’t have to leave your beloved spot right in the middle of the set.

Merchandise Stand
Be honest… You’ve just got to have that new T-shirt to remember this fantastic experience by. And what about bringing some gifts to your friends who couldn’t join the party? For all those fashionable phone cases, gadgets, shirts, wristbands, ear plugs and other kinds of merchandise, there’s the merchandise stand. Once again, let us suggest you to plan ahead. Some prefer to do their shopping straight away while others rather do it just before they leave the venue. Either way, make sure you don’t miss out on anything!

Radio Dome
The Radio Dome is one of the most charming attractions of a State Of Trance, where Armin van Buuren will give you that unique radio experience. Make sure to drop by, to really feel part of his very own A State Of Trance! We know it’s on your bucket list.

Once you enter the area, you will be given a pair of headphones. This way, you can listen to the whole stream while waving hello to the man himself.  And maybe, just maybe, you’ll get picked and taken inside the dome to meet the living legend.

The Exit
We’d love to go on for days, but unfortunately, we can’t. Once it’s time to leave, don’t just rush outside. Take a moment to chill and breath, check on your friends and be sure that everyone made it through safely. If you have followed our suggestion to meet up regularly, this shouldn’t be a problem. Be sure take all of your personal belongings with you, check your locker twice and prepare to say goodbye to the majestic Jaarbeurs. And don’t forget to check out the aftermovie to relive it all again. Below, you’ll find the aftermovie from last year’s edition!

Have fun! We’ll see you there!

    You are saying this : “This counts even for those of you who are in possession of a VIP bracelet. Even though you can use the fast lanes, keep in mind that when an area is full, you cannot enter.”

    This is a change from previous years and I would have not bought a VIP ticket I this was disclosed first. We should have access to the VIP Deck without restriction. And how will fast lane works ? How will it be decide between who from regular lane or fast lane enters ??

    You are not making the ones who paid for VIP happy and this has to change.

      Hi Robert Viau,

      Thank you for your comment. I’m sorry for the ambiguity. I’ve tried to clarify things by adding an extra line. Those who are in possession of a VIP ticket will, of course, always have access to the main stage.

      Hope this helps.
