The team-up that is Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano is one that should not be overlooked, nor one that should be underestimated. They spoil their fans with a distinctive sound referred to as ‘sexy tribal’, and their performances are as smashing as they are sought-after. They recently hit up the Armada Trice imprint with their fresh cut ‘Horny Bounce’, so we decided to sit down with the renowned duo to talk about their sound and how their extensive collaboration came to be…

Your brand new record ‘Horny Bounce’ marks your debut on Armada Trice. How does your sound compare to the sound of the imprint. Where does it coincide and where does it differ?
SJ: “We are known for that sexy tribal house sound, but over the years we slowly evolved to a more club/techy progressive sound. Our latest track ‘Horny Bounce’ fits the Armade trice imprint perfectly. It contains that techy club vibe combined with the well-known warm sounds and melodic drops.”

Can we expect more of your tunes to hit the Armada Trice label?
RM: “I think we definitely fit the Armada Trice profile, so never say never…”

You often refer to your sound as ‘sexy tribal’. Could you elaborate on that? What are the foundations of your signature sexy tribal sound, and what is it that makes it both ‘sexy’ and ‘tribal’?
SJ: “We’re known for that sound because whenever we’re playing a set, we try to push boundaries when it comes to combining the melodic warm house sound and the darker techy/progressive house sound. We’re always looking for new sounds, preferably warm vocals, drums, and some techy synths.”

The title of the track doesn’t leave a lot to imagination. Why did you choose to name your track ‘Horny Bounce’?
RM: “Well, there’s a ‘Horny Bounce’ in the track, isn’t there?!”

We know you crossed paths in 2006 in a clothing store where Sunnery worked and Ryan applied for an internship and that the team-up was born right there. Could you explain how such a chance meeting kick-started your extensive collaboration and how things transpired from there?
SJ: “From the moment we met, we just clicked. I can’t really describe what it was, but it just immediately felt good.”
RM: “We started working together, so we spent a lot of time. Eventually, a great friendship rose from there. We mostly shared our passion for music. That was when it all started: organizing parties in Amsterdam, DJ-ing together, and producing music.”
SJ: “It now almost sounds like we’re in a love relationship, haha. But you know it’s great to share all these amazing experiences together with Ryan, just like it has always been ever since we started working together.”

You play the biggest stages in the world, you host your own event ‘Sexy by Nature’, and you have even opened your own restaurant in Amsterdam. One might wonder if you even have time left to produce music. How do you divide your attention between all those projects and where does music fit in?
SJ & RM: “Schedule, schedule, schedule! As long as you schedule, all is possible.”
